Sharp Price for Commando Knife

Report from our auction on 10th June 2009

At John Goodwin’s latest collective sale of furniture and effects held at the Pavilion Room in Ledbury there was once again particularly strong demand for jewellery, much of which was from private buyers and a good level of specialist interest in a collection of good quality paintings.

The sale began with the painting section with notable prices including £2000 for a caricature depicting John Masefield by Sir Max Beerbomb which, fuelled by local interest, achieved a hammer price of £2000.

Specialist advertising and internet marketing resulted in considerable demand for the paintings by known artists, in particular 2 oils by RO Dunlop sold at £1000 and £1250 respectively.

Local interest resulted in a sale price of £580 for a humorous hunting gauache by Basil Nightingale

On this occasion there were no major surprises in the furniture section with Victorian and other chests of drawers selling to £260, a rather nice set of art nouveau style oak dining chairs at £150 and a button upholstered leather easy chair which, despite some damage, sold at £180 to the trade.

The sun was shining and this no doubt fuelled interest in the garden furniture and effects with a cast iron fountain selling at £480, a set of unusual garden furniture fashioned from tree trunks selling at £250 and a large cast iron lamp, a particularly weighty item, which sold at a very reasonable £200.

There was the usual eclectic range of entries in the miscellaneous section with two impressive padlocks selling at £130 a quantity of brass and other door handles at £145. Two plush teddy bears sold at £170 and four jigsaws including one with a scene by Louis Wain selling at £150

In the china and porcelain section Beswick figures continues to perform well with prices to £150 for a model of an Exmoor pony (Heatherman) which sold in the room against a telephone bidder.

There appears to be a very strong local demand for militaria and associated items and once again medals performed extremely well with prices to £190.  Perhaps the biggest surprise in this section went to a World War II commando knife selling to a specialist collector over the telephone at £520.

The sale concluded with the jewellery section with considerable demand from both trade and private buyers ensuring good levels of competition and some excellent prices.  The fluctuating gold price has led to unpredictable prices over the last three or four sales and on this occasion sovereigns were selling at around £130 and a quarter krugrand at £160.  A modern 14 carat necklace and bracelet sold at £160 and 9 carat gold muff chain at £190.  A gold opal bracelet at £160 2 pocket watches at £270 and a gents Longines quartz watch at £200.

John Goodwins next sale is scheduled for the 29th of July and once again has a large entry of jewellery and watches.
